A New Year and An Unchanging God

New Year’s Resolutions. We’ve all made them, and we’ve all forgotten them soon after. We make them because it makes us feel better. But we drop them because feeling better doesn’t actually make us better. Feelings are fickle. But thankfully, our God is not. He is unchanging.

Kevin here. And it’s obvious to me that feelings come and go. We’re created by God to have feelings and they can be good. They can also be depressing, depending on our circumstances at the moment. That’s why I love the fact that God’s promises don’t change based on my feelings.

unchanging james verse

God tells us in the book of James chapter 1 verse 17 that:

“with God there is no variation or shadow cast by His turning.”

That simply means that God doesn’t change, His promises never change, and they never fail. And His greatest promise is that if we trust Jesus to save us from our sins, He will… instantly… once and for all. And that Promise is not based on a resolution made quickly on the last day of the year and then soon forgotten. That’s The Promise made by God, who is indeed is unchanging.

Let’s look at a few more passages that remind us the benefits of His consistency in the new year.

Hebrews 13:8 declares, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” This powerful verse encapsulates the eternal constancy of God. It speaks to the unchanging character of Jesus Christ, the divine embodiment of God’s never-changing nature. In a world where everything seems subject to change, God remains steadfast and consistent across all time frames—past, present, and future.

unchanging word

Isaiah 40:8 echoes this sentiment, affirming the enduring nature of God’s unchanging Word: “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” The temporal nature of all created things is contrasted with the everlasting permanence of God’s Word. Despite the transient nature of our surroundings, God’s truth remains constant and unyielding, providing an anchor of stability in the ebb and flow of life.

Lamentations 3:22 beautifully encapsulates the faithfulness of God: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end.” Tucked amidst the sad nature of this book, this verse reassures us of God’s unwavering love and unceasing compassion. His faithfulness endures despite our failings, and His mercies are perpetually available, never constrained by time or circumstance.

God’s unchanging nature holds profound implications for our lives:

  • Foundation of Trust: In a world characterized by uncertainty, God’s unchanging nature offers us a solid foundation upon which to build our trust. We can rely on His promises, knowing that they remain constant and dependable.
  • A Source of Comfort: When life throws challenges and unexpected twists, knowing that God remains unchanged brings comfort. His faithfulness assures us that we are not alone and that He walks with us through every season.
  • A Call to Faithfulness: Understanding God’s unchanging nature motivates us to align our lives with His unchanging principles. As His followers, we strive to reflect His constancy in our character and actions.
  • Hope for the Future: The eternal nature of God’s Word gives us hope for the future. It assures us that His plans for us are secure, and His purposes will ultimately prevail.

Remember God loves you, and God has a plan for your life. Happy New Year!
