Sing A New Song: An Invitation To Renewal

We all have our favorite old songs. Maybe it’s a hymn you’ve known since you were a child. Or maybe it’s a southern gospel song that captured your heart a few years ago. But sometimes we need to sing a new song. In today’s blog, Kevin shares how the old ones aren’t bad. However, the instruction to “sing a new song” always good.

Sing a new song bible

Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth! Sing to the Lord, bless His name; tell of His salvation from day to day. Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous works among all the peoples! For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the Lord made the heavens.

Ecclesiastes 3 tells us there’s a time and a season for everything. Change can be hard for all of us, but there are moments when we’re called by the Lord to put the “old” in its appropriate place on the mantel, and pick up the “new.”

This can be true for so many areas in our life… friends, jobs, homes, even beliefs that we once had, that over time, God has fine tuned to the point we realize some of what we thought was truth was actually the tradition of men. Sometimes that can keep us from growing in the Truth of God’s Word.

One misconception is that by putting the “old” in its place means that it must have been wrong. This isn’t always true. Sometimes something is perfect for the moment in time. For example, when we were five years old we wore clothes that fit us. There was nothing wrong with them. But as we grew, they were replaced with new ones that fit us at that moment in our life. God is in the “New” business.

The old songs the Hebrews were singing were not wrong, they just weren’t fresh. Our faith needs ‘re-new-ing’ from time to time. God wants us in a mode of growing closer toward Him and not settling in the comfort of the “old,” even though the old was good for its time.

Maybe there’s something that’s been holding you back from growing into your faith the way God intends. Pray about it and see if God isn’t calling you to “sing a new song”, step out of yesterday, and breathe in the fresh air of God’s evergreen Grace!
