It’s a well-known fact that when you love somebody you like to spend time with them. I know in my life there are people that I hung out with 40 years ago that I still hang out with to this very day. You want to be around people you care about. And it’s the same for God. This is Kevin of Hope in the Morning, and I’m thrilled to tell you why the familiar name Emmanuel means something amazing for you today.
WHERE DOES “EMMANUEL” COME FROM?
The Christmas story in Matthew tells us something special about the child that would be born as a Savior for the world:
The great thing about this name is its meaning. You see, Emmanuel means “God with us.”
Think about it for a moment. Of all the cool places in heaven and in our universe that God could have spent time, He chose to be God with us! He chose to walk among us, living a very human life filled with all the happiness and sorrow we endure. His decision even meant a painful, public death, but he chose it anyway.
WHY DID HE BECOME EMMANUEL?
Now why would God want to be with us? Who leaves paradise to spend time on a planet full of illness, anger, hatred, and war? Someone who wants to be with the ones He loves… and that’s you.
God came to earth… for you.
He was born in a stable… for you.
He died on a cross… for you.
Why? Because He wants to spend eternity, you guessed it… with you.
That’s the real message of Christmas.
